The Power of 'The Narrative'

Charles Martin brings up an important point in This Article. Speech is so powerful. How you tell a story and report it really affects the readers. This is exactly what the chapter about mobilizing citizen participation is The Press is referring to. The average citizen is just going to read one newspaper and a couple articles and that is going to be how they view worldly events happening around us. However, I think that is giving the journalist too much credibility. This just an emphasis how important it is to be aware of what you are reading and know that the truth isn't just that simple. This makes me question how corrupt our society is because people are so affected by what one person says- and there is so much more out there than that.

  1. Do you mean that the we're giving journalists too much credit when we say that it is their slants and biases that essentially shape reader's opinions?

Because I think that to a certain degree, everyone does get their opinions from some other source. For example, as children, most people form their political opinion around what they hear their parents discussing at home. Hopefully, once they grow older they realize that just because their parents think a certain thing does not necessarily mean they are right.
Very few people actually think up something without first reading/hearing a credible source (journalist/TV personality) on the topic. I don't even think that this is a bad thing. As long as everyone realizes that they should always be aware for signs of bias..which very few people actually realize...it'll be ok.

I don't think that this makes our society corrupt, just narrow minded and unaware.
I also think it's better to have a narrow-minded opinion then no opinion at all.
    But that's just my opinion.

  2. I definitely agree with you- maybe i did word it wrong 'corrupt' wasn't the right word- narrow minded and unaware is more accurate. - i was trying to emphasize how crazy it is how unaware our society is- and that the more societal friendly pieces are the ones are the 'light stories'
I posted this article not to voice something bad- but i felt that it was thought provoking and interesting to point out the obvious which is the effect that people have when voicing their opinion in public forums, because even though it is obvious it is very often just bypassed as the way things are.
